Medical Bankruptcy Fairness Act of 2009
I have a received a few questions recently related to a bill in Congress that would make it easier for some individuals to file for bankruptcy. The bill, S. 1624: Medical Bankruptcy Fairness Act of 2009, would make it easier for those individuals experiencing financial distress due to medical issues to file for bankruptcy protection.
It was introduced August 6, 2009, by Senator Sheldon Whitehouse [D-RI] and is currently in the first step of the legislative process. Co-sponsors of the bill include Al Franken [D-MN], John Kerry [D-MA], and Bernard Sanders [I-VT].
The summary of the bill states that it “restore[s] bankruptcy protections for individuals experiencing economic distress as caregivers to ill, injured, or disabled family members, and to exempt from means testing debtors whose financial problems were caused by serious medical problems, and for other purposes.”
